For the third consecutive year, we surveyed more than 500 small business owners across 12 industries about their technology adoption, investment levels, and the outcomes they’re seeing. This year’s findings reveal a market in transition — and a widening gap between the businesses moving aggressively and those waiting to see.

Key Finding #1: Automation Adoption is Accelerating

The percentage of small businesses with at least one automated workflow increased from 34% in 2024 to 51% in 2026. Among businesses with 10+ employees, that number jumps to 74%. The most commonly automated functions: appointment reminders (67%), invoice follow-up (52%), and lead acknowledgment (49%).

Key Finding #2: AI Tools Are Crossing the Mainstream Threshold

For the first time, more than half of respondents (53%) reported using at least one AI-powered tool in their business. The most common: AI writing assistants (71% of AI tool users), AI customer service tools (38%), and AI-powered analytics (24%).

Key Finding #3: The ROI Gap is Real

Businesses that classify themselves as “technology leaders” — early adopters with intentional technology strategy — reported 23% higher revenue growth and 31% higher profit margin than self-described “technology laggards.” The gap has widened every year we’ve run this survey.
